B-Flat Blues: Self-Comping With Guide Tones and More

This study focuses on using the guide tones and chords built around them to comp for yourself over 4 choruses of the blues. You'll also learn single-note lines that will help fill out your jazz/blues playing.

Guide tones are the 3rd and 7th of a chord. They’re the notes in the chord that communicate the chord quality. They can also be an anchor or visual guide on the fretboard. As you get comfortable finding the 3rds and 7ths of each chord, you’ll be able to reach for other notes around them with your free digits and come up with interesting chord combinations and single note sendoffs on your own.

The guide tone notes are regular-sized, while other notes in the chord are cue sized (smaller) notes. This will help you quickly identify the guidetones of each chord.

Here are 5 things to take away from this study:

1) Comping for yourself

2) Soloing with chords

3) Jazz and blues lines

4) Balancing chords against lines when self-comping

5) Learning to identify, comp with, and build on the guide tones of each chord

This bundle includes a PDF with standard notation and tab, nearly 25 minutes of video with the full performance and lesson, performance audio track, and bass backing track.
